Course Requirements
No previous experience is necessary. The courses are designed for the beginner student who wants to experience every facet of the shoemaking process.
Students start with an initial concept/picture/drawing which they will transform into a wearable pair of shoes by the conclusion of the course. Students are expected to research at least 3 styles of shoe they would like to make. These shoe styles or designs will become the project for the course.
The Process
- Patternmaking /Design. A pattern is made on the Last (i.e. the foot model). This pattern is transferred from a three dimensional last to a two dimensional cardboard pattern. A test of the pattern will be made from scrap leather to ensure fit and design. This is called a Pullover. The pullover is assessed and tweaked for fit and style. The Pullover is then transferred into a two dimensional cardboard pattern ready for cutting leather that comprise the upper pieces.
- Cutting/Clicking The Leather. Choosing your leather and cutting the pattern pieces.
- Upper Stitching. This is where all the pieces that comprise the upper part of the shoe are stitched together.
- Lasting. Is the process where the stitched upper is pulled over The Last and fastened to the insole. Once the upper is attached and the stiffeners are inserted and set the sole then heel is attached.
- Finishing. This is where the sole and heel is trimmed cleaned and socked ready for wear.
- All shoes made are for the student to keep
