Andrew McDonald Shoemaker

We offer two intensive courses

The five Day course

The five day course is a closely directed learning experience, focusing students on

applying the techniques and skills neccesary to design and make  one pair of shoes.

The ten day course

The ten day course follows the five day course for the first 5 days  then during  the second  week/pair
the student digs deeper into the  shoemaking proceesses and is
expected to apply learnings independantly  to build their learning experience.
We appreciate that every student is different and tuition is guided to suit your skill level

Course Activities

Patternmaking /Design.

A pattern is made on the Last (i.e. the foot model).
This design is drawn on the last then trasferred to a cardboard pattern.
A test of this   pattern will be made from scrap leather to ensure fit and design.
This is called a "Pullover"  or trial shoe . The pullover is assessed and tweaked for fit and style.
A pattern is then made which represents the design and appropriate measurements

Cutting/Clicking

The Leather. Choosing your leather and cutting the pattern pieces.

Upper Stitching

This is where all the pieces that comprise the upper part of the shoe are  skived,
  folded  and stitched together.

Lasting

Is the process where the stitched upper is pulled over the Last and fastened to the insole.
Once the upper is attached and the stiffeners are inserted and set, the sole and heel is attached.

Finishing

This is where the  sole and heel is trimmed cleaned and socked ready for wear.
All shoes made by the student  are for the student to keep
